Silence

He was on my role, but I hardly knew him. It seemed like he was always absent or in detention or suspended. The few times he was in my class he behaved himself and did fine work. In some of his other classes, and in the halls, and on the bus, it was a different story. I knew a lot less about him then I do about my other students. I have most of them for more than one class. I am their “case manager”. No one was talking about him much yesterday. Just a stray comment here or there. In the dominant culture of our school, one does not speak of the dead. Not until lunch did one of the staff members confirm the whispered rumor. He had been killed over Christmas break. He had been stabbed. He was dead and buried. Hadn’t I seen it in the paper? Tragic, Violent, and forgotten.

Gosh, I am so sorry to hear that. It sort of reminds me of the movie Danerous Minds. I always get choked up and moved by that movie, but it's even worse when the story becomes real to life. I'll be praying for you, your students, his parents, and your school.

He was the nephew of one of the ladies on our worship team. Their home burned down last year. They lost an uncle who was buried on the same day he was. Another close family member is dealing with cancer. His dad is anglo, for which he was picked on numerous times and it became a contributing factor in his murder. He was killed by his peers. The human race has not progressed at all, no matter how much we think that it has.

My prayers will be with his family, and with the two of you I know who knew him. Thank you Chris, for giving some background on this person whom I likely would never have known regardless of whether this unfortunate occurance had happened.

I agree with you Chris.
Watched the news tonight. What a dark and depraved and depressing world we live in. Looking for some light, some hope, but it is hard to keep ones head above water sometimes. School problems, family problems, World Wide problems, swirling and swirling. Thanks to all who care and pray. ME

Please tell me, were you talking about me "M C"? I don't know what I said if it was me. Please email me and let me know. I pray it wasn't me. I apologize if I said anything offensive. I really don't know what it was. Please, please, please, tell me.

Okay, I think it was the person in a blog with Wanderer? Am I right? Because that isn't me.

Whew! I'm glad too. It scared me! I was frantic trying to think what I could have set to upset anyone. I can laugh about it now, but I was sure a mess yesterday!

I'll be praying for you and your students.

So sad. I pray for your hand in helping his classmates in coping with his death. It's never easy for any of us to loose a peer, especially children.

the problem with this death, is that the kids are not talking about it. it isn't proper to talk about the dead. they are just "no more". there are some rumblings that it was gang related. some of the kids have mentioned being nervous about that to other teachers. but for the most part, it is as if it never even happened. I was going through some papers from last semester and found three of his that I never handed back, because he got suspended before I was done grading them. A 100% and 2 90's. Good Work Gabe.
